general rant

ted dunphy’s comment to my introductory rant is spot on – we can’t expect teachers effectively to impart user skills to students unless they are users themselves. this need for engagment applies both on the professional and personal levels. my experience shows that if teachers find stuff that is useful to them in their work, they’ll use the technology but if they find stuff that is useful to them in their social and personal lives they’ll engage with it more rapidly and quickly become unconsciously competent users. there’s something here about developing an emotional engagement, not merely an intellectual one.
