Skills for today?

Think about this, a quote from e-Skills uk, the Sector Skills Council, “9 out of 10 new jobs demand ICT skills and employers need their staff to have increasingly high levels of IT user skills. Yet 40% of today’s ICT users have received no IT training at all. This is at a time with organisations such as the National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) are campaigning for ICT to be classified as the third ’skill for life’, behind literacy and numeracy”.

And this, “Companies that introduce teleworking have been shown to experience employee productivity gains of up to 50%”. (Teleworking – the business environment. Tiscali teleworking product team, may 2005)

And this, “Collaborative working is increasingly being identified as a way of creating competitive advantage in a knowledge-based economy. The knowledge economy is seen as the most effective way to compete with emerging economies in the face of globalisation. The adoption and exploitation of ICT are a pre-requisite to making this happen. SWERDA Draft ICT strategy.

So, when are we going to start teaching online collaboration skills to kids? We don’t even teach them keyboard skills yet!
